The M22 Rock Crusher would come later to accommodate the heavy twist of Chevrolet's big-blocks in the mid-1960s. The M20 and M21 transmissions produced from 1963-'74 are easy to identify in both

The term rock crusher refers to the noise made by the meshing of the strong-er helical gears in the M22. Later model 1971-'74 Muncies are also popular with racers, because these transmissions used a 32-spline output that is stronger than the early 27-spline, and the newer units seem to perform better in high-rpm and high-horsepower applications
The progression of the 10-spline input identification groove system. From left to right, early M20, M21, later M20, and M22. You really cannot get the early M20 and M22 mixed up because the early M20 came with a 7/8-inch countershaft, while the M22 did not. In fact all of the upper-speed gears have the same tooth count regardless of ratios
Feb 21, 2010 Although some claim that the M23 is a 'rock crusher', it is indicated that this box was assembled in both wide and close ratio components and also with straight cut gears common to the rock crusher (M22) transmission. Looks like you have a second design-feb. 28th, 1968, M20 or M21. Definitely not a rock crusher(no straight cut gears)

The 2.20:1 ratio is commonly designated as the Muncie M21 transmission. The 2.56:1 ratio is commonly referred to as the M20. Muncie also had a second close-ratio transmission designated M22 and often referred to as the rock-crusher, which was used behind the highest-performance engines and in Corvettes, the M22 is a highly sought-after performance transmission
This a BRAND NEW SUPERCASE M22 Muncie Rockcrusher Style Transmission. This is a BEEFY version of the original Rock Crusher transmission. Most all the weak points of an original Muncie have been solved by the Super-Case design. The Supercase has extra casting in all the known weak areas
Times and requirements have changed making both the M21 and M22 the closest ratio production 4 speeds ever produced but also not practical for today's driving habits unless road racing is your thing. The new Muncies being built today have some better ratios.Today's examples of the new car gear set ups are Mustang GT's with a 3.35 1st gear and 3
